Beatitudes - Where do I Fit In?, Trinity Lutheran Church, Brattleboro, VT, February 13, 2022 Luke 6:20 Jesus taught, “Blessed are the poor, yours in the kingdom of God…. Woe to the rich, you have received your comfort.” The poor are lauded. The rich are warned. I think there is more to this. Why are the rich warned? And who is rich? Jesus never “defines” what makes us rich. And what makes us poor? In truth, I have more than a lot of others. The “poorest” person in the USA has more than many people in other countries. It's all relative. The issue is one of identity. If I find my identity in wealth – then my wealth is the center of my life. Jesus teaches – I have my reward. In contrast – the poor. Well, who is poor? The issue again is one of identity. We could rephrase this teaching – blessed are those who find their lives in relation to God…. Woe to those who find their lives in their stuff. Jesus came to restore sight to the blind. All of us get blurry vision. All of us.
