Who Are You Looking At? Trinity Lutheran Church, Brattleboro, VT, September 25, 2022 Luke 17:3 Jesus counseled not to have a lifestyle which might tempt someone else to sin. He said, “Watch yourself.” Often we look at others and compare ourselves – either subtly or overtly. Sometimes this is a good thing and leads us to say, “I am grateful for where I am, as that person has a more difficult life than I do.” At other times we compare in order to find fault in others and thereby feel better about ourselves, “I am not as self-centered as that person!” In this teaching Jesus dismisses all these comparisons and says “Look in the mirror.” What is the example I set? Do I have a forgiving heart or am I judgmental? Am I encouraging of the dreams of my neighbor? Do I model a healthy lifestyle caring for this gift of life I have received? Self-awareness is good. Jesus said, watch yourself. Be aware of your thoughts, your words, your actions. Pastor Jon Heydenreich presides, joined by Ron Solberg as assistant minister, Ingrid Lukas-Howe as reader, and Marsha Heydenreich on piano. No matter who you are in your walk of faith, or where you are in that journey, you are invited to the communion table at Trinity Lutheran Church. Trinity Lutheran Church is an ELCA congregation, more or less traditional and relaxed, and a Reconciling in Christ congregation where all are welcome.
