Description:
  • When asked how she comes up with the expressions on her sculptures now on display at Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts, artist Fran Bull says, "Golly, maybe you can tell me," with a laugh.
  •
  • She compares the process to casting characters in a film, and said she doesn't necessarily use references, but is inspired by pictures of faces she's seen.
  •
  • The sculptures can be seen in the window at the gallery at 181-183 Main St. in Brattleboro, which Bull calls, "the best gallery in Vermont." Her exhibit, up through Oct. 15, also includes etchings and acrylic paintings.
  •
  • Bull said the older paintings are acrylic, and some have India ink and gold powders. The more recent pictures, she made out of Sharpies on canvas, sketched during the height of quarantining due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When she gives an artist talk this Saturday, September 30th at the gallery at 5 p.m., she will bring her notebooks to show how her paintings evolved from sketches.
