Description:

This video is a worship service at First Congregational Church of West Brattleboro in Vermont. The service is for the First Sunday in Lent, which is the beginning of our Lenten journey to the cross with Jesus. Lent is a time of penitence and self examination, but it is also a time when we resolve to live in a way that reflects our status as children of God. The scripture passage is Matthew 4:1-11, which recounts the story of Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness. Jesus was baptized by his cousin, John the Baptizer, and when he came out of the water Jesus was confirmed by God to be God's son. Jesus then went into the wilderness to fast and pray. The story of the temptation directly follows the story of Jesus' baptism. In the sermon, entitled "The Tempter," we explore the notion that Satan didn't tempt Jesus to do anything that was "bad." Rather, Satan tempted Jesus to act in a way that was counter to Jesus' character as God's beloved Son.
