Description:
  • Artist Cathy Cone and BMAC Director of Exhibitions Sarah Freeman discuss Cone’s photographic practice. This talk takes place in connection with "Cathy Cone: Portals and Portraits" on view at Brattleboro Museum & Art Center March 11 - June 11, 2023.

  • Each of Cone’s painted tintype portraits begins with a photograph or scan of a tintype from her personal collection. Cone modifies the images using gouache, watercolor, collaging, stamping, drawing, and digital drawing; sometimes she works directly on the tintype itself. The resulting images are ghostly yet tender and call on memory and feelings of nostalgia. Cone’s photogravures and works in other photographic processes similarly contain layers of imagery that obscure the subjects’ faces and create a push and pull between visibility and obscurity. Fundamentally, Cone offers visual connections with the past while also calling into question the purpose of a portrait and our processes of coming to know and understand one another.

  • Cone is a photographer and painter. Her surrealist approach to photography began in the late 1970s with the introduction of the “Diana” camera. This led to her investigation of experimental techniques and a multidisciplinary approach to her poetic image-making. Cone received her training at Ohio University and the Vermont Studio Center. She received her M.F.A. at Maine Media College. Her work has been exhibited at various institutions, including the Weisman Art Museum, DeCordova Museum, Griffin Museum of Photography, and Vermont Center for Photography. Cone is currently creative director of the Workshops and Studio at Cone Editions Press, a collaborative printmaking studio co-founded by Cone and her husband, master printer Jon Cone, in Port Chester, New York in 1980 and now located in East Topsham, Vermont.
