- Adam Goodheart is a historian, essayist, journalist, and bestselling author of 1861: The Civil War Awakening, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in history. It was named Book of the Year by the History Book Club and the audiobook edition won the Audie Award for best history title of the year. His articles have appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, National Geographic, and The American Scholar. Goodheart is the director of Washington College’s Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. He is also featured in a two-hour National Geographic documentary about North Sentinel Island, “The Mission,” premiering in theaters and streaming in late 2023. Goodheart has made many broadcast media appearances, including on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” “Morning Edition,” and “All Things Considered,” as well as on the BBC, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, and the History Channel. He lives in Washington, D.C., and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
