Moments Project – The History of the Armory
The Armory and Community Hall (1923). Brattleboro Vermont.
After World War I, a group of Brattleboro citizens explored creating a
memorial for those who served. The Vermont National Guard,
Brattleboro High School, and local organizations were looking for a
building. One building to serve all was supported by most of the
community.
At the dedication the Armory and Community Hall, it was said the
structure must be more than a memorial to those who served in the
war, it must give constant and active expression to the value of
community cooperation. The official dedication was delayed until two
memorial bronze tablets containing the names of every local man and
woman who served in World War I arrived for installation in June, 1923.
Brattleboro’s Armory was collaboratively funded with state and local
monies. The Community Hall, on the top floor, was designed to meet
various needs. A stage, balcony, and open space for meetings, dances
and sports activities were features of the Hall.
