Moments Project – The Grandstand and Brattleboro Union High School
The Brattleboro Vermont High School played many athletic contests at Island Park but most of the island washed out by 1927. The high school relocated its fields here.
The Works Progress Administration and BHS coach Raymond Draghetti proposed improvement and expansion. A grandstand was constructed with restrooms and locker rooms. A ¼ mile cinder track was added. Completion was set for September 1938 but was completed in 1940. In 1946, the grandstand burned and was rebuilt with concrete and steel. The grandstand is one of four baseball grandstands in Southern Vermont.
By 1949, after a jump in local births, the school buildings (Main Street) could not handle more students.
The Valley Fair had been here from 1886 – 1931. In 1949 the town voted to build a new high school. On September 17, 1951 BUHS opened.
