Moments Project – The First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church (1867). Brattleboro Vermont.
This red brick church began with a central door, replaced in 1889 with a stained-glass window and border designed by Louis Tiffany and John LaFarge. The window was donated by the children of Jacob and Desdemona Estey, founders of the Estey Organ Company. The window, entitled “Christ Before the Doctors,” was lit originally from the inside by gas lamps. Another Tiffany Studio window of Christ is in the upper sanctuary. A third of Saint John was sold in 2010 to keep the church open to house the homeless during winter.
While the original high central bell tower remained in 1889, two Low Gothic side towers were added. Pointed arches grace the windows and doors. The same architect designed the George Brooks House on the corner with High Street and the former All Souls Church on the corner with Grove Street.
