Moments Project – The Brooks House
The Brooks House Main Street Brattleboro Vermont.
In 1869 a fire destroyed the west side of Main Street between Elliot and High Streets.
Businessman Edward Crosby stepped forward and rebuilt the southern end of Main Street’s west side. Crosby inspired George Brooks to purchase the remaining section of Main Street and build a commercial block containing storefronts and a hotel. The first brick was laid for the Brooks House block on May 1, 1871.
A Newbury, Vermont newspaper said, “It is a magnificent structure, and will be supplied with every modern convenience and comfort …”
The first floor was mostly occupied by stores. A veranda was on the front. 80 sleeping rooms were on the third and fourth floors. A large dining area and a ballroom also were attractive features of the hotel.
