Moments Project – Living Memorial Park

The earliest information regard­ing the land now occupied by Liv­ing Memorial Park dates back to 1790. It eventually became the property of Charles Clark.
In 1944, it was suggested to start a fund for a “living memorial” after WWII was over. Individuals were asked to purchase War Bonds. Mrs. Minnie Clark sold the land to the town of Brattleboro for $35,000.
In 1955, the ski tow that had been built in 1937, was upgraded, a road was built leading to the upper park, groups of young people cleared land. A swimming pool was built for $115,000, swampy land was drained, a pond was dug, landscaping was done around the pool, a swamp behind the swimming pool was converted into a skating pond, a shelter, a softball field, a Small Fry baseball diamond, a skating rink, tennis courts, and an outdoor theater were all built.
In 1957, Brattleboro was one of eleven communities to earn the title “All American City.” Municipal Building –

I agree to abide by all BCTV Policies and Procedures.
