Moments Project – Devens Block

Devens Block is one of Brattleboro’s oldest commercial buildings. It was constructed from 1840 – 1845 by the Holbrook family and features a taller storefront and elongated second-story windows. In 1864, Civil War veteran Captain Henry Devens, who settled in Brattleboro, purchased the Curtis Screw Factory. Devens’ legacy lives on in this building and his red brick home at the corner of Putney Road and North Street.

Devens Block served as a civic landmark. As early as 1869, the upper floor hosted the Sedgwick Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was Brattleboro’s Union veterans’ group that was active throughout the community and helped establish the Civil War Memorial on the Town Common in 1887.

Devens Block was a hub in the 20th century. From 1927 to the early 2000’s, it housed Baker’s Books, a longtime newsstand, bookstore, and distributor. Since 2011, it has been home to Turn It Up!

I agree to abide by all BCTV Policies and Procedures.
