By 1956, Brattleboro was aware that the town would soon have to replace or renovate the old Brooks Library.
Experts agreed that a prime requisite was that it be here on Main Street. A modern library, like a bookstore, is in effect merchandising books and services to the community.
The purpose was to combine efficiency with taste and beauty. It was stated the town’s people would heartily approve the changes and improvements to the Brooks Library and carry out its purpose for decades to come. The library was constructed to be a people’s house.
The library includes an art collection. Many pieces are in public view, including sculptor Daniel C. French’s Spirit of Life (1914), and Larkin G. Mead’s Snow Angel (circa 1887).
As George Brooks had said prior to the old library’s dedication in 1887
— “A well-selected Free Library is a powerful and wise educator.”
