Description:

George Harvey delivered the keynote talk at the 50th anniversary directors meeting of the New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution. The event took place on a day of a heavy snowfall, and a lot of people stayed at home, both for that reason and to avoid spread of Covid-19. Because it was known that very few people would attend, the meeting took place in a small venue that was in use as an art exhibit. A half dozen people were actually in attendance, while others joined via Zoom. As a result, the talk has an unusual, informal feeling for such a meeting. The talk addresses the fact that nuclear power is increasingly seen as needed to address the climate crisis. It takes a look at whether that could possibly be true. It concludes that nuclear power is not just more expensive and produces waste that we still do not know what to do with. Nuclear power has absolutely no advantage over a combination of solar photovoltaics, windpower, and batteries. It is not more reliable. If we want to stop climate change, it is vitally important that we put up the greatest amount of clean energy sources we can as quickly as we can. We can get far more electricity, quicker and at less cost, from renewables and batteries. It is truly important that we avoid building new nuclear power plants.
