In this time of an opioid crisis, it may be considered acceptable to think the use of drugs like alcohol or marijuana among teens is “safer”. In this CORTalk, from April of 2018, Debby Haskins discusses the importance of preventing the early use of all substance and why this matters to the adolescent brain. Also, we learn how delaying the use of these substances can help prevent the misuse of opioids or other drugs. Guest speaker Debby Haskins has been in the substance abuse field for 25 years. Her passion is working with adolescents and their families to break the cycle of addiction by presenting information in an experiential way. 
 Debby is the former Executive Director of the Association of Student Assistance Professionals of Vermont (ASAP of VT). She is a Umatter trainer for Center for Health and Learning as a Suicide Prevention Specialist. She also teaches two online courses: Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug, as well as the Injury & Violence Prevention courses through Union Institute. Debby has a private practice in Central Vermont; and has been in the substance abuse field for 25 years. Her passion is working with adolescents and their families in breaking the cycle of addiction, and presenting information in an experiential way.
