Cynthia Parker-Houghton, Lead Studio Designer at Natalie Blake Studios in Brattleboro, VT, uses the landscape to unite the narratives of the Brattleboro Words Trail. She creates the maps, which will be printed and distributed locally, by first carving large-scale clay murals. With the generous support of many local volunteers and contributors, along with matching funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Words Trail brings into vivid focus the people and places forming Brattleboro's unique identity as a center for innovation and excellence in printing, publishing, writing and storytelling. The Trail itself is available free online at, and is comprised of audio stories researched, composed, and created by the community, showcasing why Brattleboro has long been known as a "literary hub" and continues to draw those with an interest in "words". From the most well-known, to the under-appreciated, and even to the forgotten: the Trail and accompanying maps provide a unique look at the region, the land, and its people.
