Description:

  • St. Michael School junior Lanie Goodwin’s strong stage presence and singing abilities prompted high praise from the judges of the fifth annual Windham County’s Got Talent presented by the Brattleboro Reformer.
  •
  • Goodwin won the $1,000 prize in the contest. She said she isn’t sure how she’ll spend the money yet but it might go toward renovating a bus she’s turning into a tiny home.
  • Judges for the event on Thursday at Latchis Theatre included Kristen Ziter Taylor, owner of Brattleboro Area Realty, Amanda Crosby, employee at Brattleboro Subaru, David Hiler, co-owner of Whetstone Beer Co., and Peter “Fish” Case, radio personality and Brattleboro Select Board candidate. And Warren Dews Jr., host, asked audience members to hand in ballots at the end to help choose the winner.
  •
  • “It was a really hard decision,” Case said. “I didn’t anticipate this being this difficult tonight.”
  •
  • Taylor called Goodwin’s performance “the most captivating of the night.”
  •
  • Right out of the gate, Brattleboro-based attorney Elizabeth Wohl wowed the audience with opera singing while conducting aerial circus tricks. Hiler described the act as “beautiful” and “otherworldly.” Judges considered her act second best.
  •
  • Gigi Birri, a student at Leland & Gray Union Middle and High School, tap danced with flair to cheers from the audience.
  •
  • “That was some serious attitude,” Hiler said. “I love that. I feel bad for your kitchen floors at home or wherever you practice.”
  •
  • Brattleboro Union High School junior Tess Bogart’s dancing got the crowd going wild. Audience members clapped along to the beat.
  •
  • “Those were some awesome moves,” Taylor said.
  •
  • Cristo Buckley showed off his many talents by singing an original R&B song. Planning to release his second album this summer, he writes music and produces his own material in a studio in his bedroom. Case said the song is so good he feels like he should have heard it somewhere else before.
  •
  • Claremont, N.H., resident India Dansereau’s singing prowess mesmerized the crowd. “It came over my body,” Taylor said. “Your voice is amazing.”
  •
  • Armed with an acoustic guitar, Ezra Holloway of Saxtons River played riffs in between strumming and singing an original tune. Hiler praised his “cool licks” and falsetto singing.
  •
  • Desmond Bode, 7, of Brattleboro, became a crowd favorite when he sang intricate lyrical melodies with his backing band/parents who go by the name The Guardians of Bode. “I loved it so much,” Case said.
  •
  • Audience members were moved by an acapella performance by Kelly Hopkins, a new Vermonter living in Bellows Falls whose voice filled the room as she sang an Appalachian folk tune and a spiritual song. Hiler commended her theatrics in addition to her impressive singing.
  •
  • Amazing body strength, control and flexibility by contortionist and circus artist Kim Melohn received big applause from the crowd and adulation from the judges. “I’ve seen pretzels with less flexibility,” Hiler said.
  •
  • Judges commended the soulfulness that country singer Timothy Wade, winner of Bennington’s Got Talent in 2020, brought to the stage.
  •
  • “I think you did an amazing job and I loved your voice Crosby said.
  •
  • Cornerstone sponsors include Brattleboro Subaru, Brattleboro Area Realty, Latchis Theatre, and Whetstone Beer Co.
