Description:

Brattleboro has a long and storied past with the Connecticut River. It’s been the setting of great recreation, industry and devastating flooding. Island Park now largely under the Connecticut became a great source of entertainment for Brattleboro - boasting a large grandstand pavilion which hosted a minor league baseball field, ballroom, bowling alleys and vaudeville stage. From 1909, traveling circuses performed there, a U.S. President spoke there, boathouses leased vessels for pleasure cruising, and a local ice boat could be seen cruising throughout the winter months. The river was clearly of great importance but by 1927 the annual flooding had taken its toll and the Island and all the recreation the Connecticut River offered largely disappeared from public consciousness. It’s time to rebuild the relationship! Join us for a talk with Kathy Urffer, Vermont/New Hampshire River Steward and Brett Morrison, director of development for the Connecticut River Conservancy who will give an overview of the organization’s priorities for Southeast Vermont and river communities across the region. Learn about how this 70-year-old nonprofit advocacy organization is championing science-based water policy stewardship, restoration, and enjoyment of healthy rivers and streams across the four-state watershed.
