Exploring Bioplastics as Art Materials 11/30/23

  • BMAC’s 2023 Climate Change Artist in Residence, Lia Rothstein, discusses her experiments and discoveries using bioplastics as art materials. Bioplastics are plastic-like materials derived from biological substances rather than petroleum. Rothstein explains her processes, answers questions, and discusses how artists can work with sustainable and non-polluting materials to achieve their artistic visions.

  • In 2012, Lia Rothstein was an artist in residence at the Baer Art Center in Hofsos, Iceland. She traveled around the country and observed firsthand its diminishing glaciers, which heightened her awareness of the effects of climate change on our environment. Rothstein’s search for biodegradable materials with sculptural potential led her to experiment with bioplastics. As the BMAC Climate Change Artist in Residence, Rothstein has worked with bioplastics made from agar (seaweed), gelatin, cassava, and tapioca. She has given workshops and talks, visited schools, and connected with other artists and researchers who focus their work on climate change.
